The art form of 'temporary intervention’ in public space

‘Mobile units’ have become a seperate genre in contemporary art. A genre in which many forms, practices and concepts thrive: Ranging from Annechien Meier’s socially engaged mobile gardens and the functional ‘neighbourghood snack’ of Tilmann Meyer Faje to the architectural genius of Jurgen Bey's BLOB. All these artists intervene in tangible public spaces with their nomadic projects.

As this art form is gaining rapidly in popularity, the recent efforts of third parties (housing associations, educational institutions, politicians, policy makers, public and not to mention the art community) to use that popularity for their own purposes, have put the intentions and strategies of concerning artists on edge. The time has come to identify and examine the forms, practices and concepts that are involved in this upcoming form of art.
